Privacy Policy
Stoprover ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use the Stoprover mobile application and website (collectively, the "Service"). Please read this policy carefully. If you disagree with its terms, please discontinue use of the Service.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Information You Provide
- Account information: When you create an account, we collect your email address and a password (stored as a hashed value).
- Route requests: The natural language text you type to generate routes (e.g., "drive me from Columbus to Cleveland, pass by a dog park").
- Stop interactions: Whether you accepted, skipped, or rated a suggested stop.
- Saved routes: Routes you choose to save to your account.
1.2 Information Collected Automatically
- Location data: We access your device's GPS location while the app is in active use (foreground only) to provide navigation and to find points of interest near your route. We do not track your location in the background or when the app is closed.
- Device information: Device type, operating system version, and app version for debugging and compatibility purposes.
- Usage data: Features used, screens visited, session duration, and crash reports.
- Anonymous session tokens: If you use the app without creating an account, we assign an anonymous session token stored on your device to associate your routes and preferences without identifying you.
1.3 Information from Third Parties
To generate routes and suggest stops, we query third-party APIs including Google Places API and OpenStreetMap. These services may log queries independently under their own privacy policies. We do not share your personal identity with these services — queries are made server-side using our API credentials.
2. How We Use Your Information
- To generate interest-optimized routes based on your requests
- To personalize stop suggestions based on your past interactions
- To save and retrieve your routes when you are logged in
- To improve the accuracy and relevance of the AI intent parsing
- To provide customer support when you contact us
- To send transactional emails (account verification, password reset, subscription receipts) — we do not send marketing emails without your explicit opt-in
- To analyze aggregate, anonymized usage patterns to improve the Service
- To detect and prevent fraud, abuse, or violations of our Terms of Service
3. How We Share Your Information
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We share data only in these limited circumstances:
- Service providers: We use third-party vendors to operate the Service (cloud hosting, payment processing, crash analytics). These vendors are contractually obligated to protect your data and may not use it for their own purposes.
- Legal requirements: We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or government authority, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Stoprover, its users, or the public.
- Business transfers: If Stoprover is acquired or merges with another company, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. You will be notified via email or a prominent notice in the app.
- With your consent: We will share your information in any other circumstance only with your explicit consent.
4. Location Data
Stoprover requests access to your device's precise location to:
- Determine your current starting point for route generation
- Provide turn-by-turn navigation
- Find points of interest near your route corridor
We access location only while the app is actively in use (foreground). We do not collect background location data. Location data associated with a route session is used to generate your route and is then stored only as the origin/destination place names, not as raw GPS coordinates, in your route history.
5. Data Retention
- Saved routes: Retained until you delete them or close your account.
- Unsaved route sessions: Deleted after 30 days.
- Stop interaction data: Retained as long as your account is active to power preference learning. You may request deletion at any time.
- Anonymous sessions: Retained for 90 days of inactivity, then deleted.
- Account data: Retained until you request account deletion. After deletion, we remove your personal information within 30 days.
6. Data Security
We implement industry-standard security measures including HTTPS/TLS encryption for all data in transit, hashed passwords (bcrypt), and access controls that limit who on our team can access your data. No method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
7. Children's Privacy
Stoprover is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us immediately at privacy@stoprover.com and we will delete it promptly.
8. Your Rights and Choices
Depending on your location, you may have the following rights:
- Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Correction: Request correction of inaccurate data.
- Deletion: Request deletion of your account and associated personal data.
- Portability: Request a machine-readable export of your route history and preference data.
- Opt-out of personalization: Disable preference learning in app settings — this stops us from using your interactions to personalize future suggestions.
- Location permissions: You may revoke location permission in your device settings at any time. The app will still function for route planning but will require you to enter a starting location manually.
To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@stoprover.com. We respond to all requests within 30 days.
9. Third-Party Links and Services
The Service may contain links to third-party websites or display content from third-party services (such as point-of-interest information). We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those third parties. We encourage you to read their privacy policies before providing any information to them.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, for significant changes, by sending a notification through the app or to your email address on file. Your continued use of the Service after any change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
